You can say what you want about Tyler Perry’s films. But simply put, he’s money in the bank. He has released six films over the past 3 years which have pulled in over $250 million dollars in total box office receipts. That’s a quarter of a billion dollars in 3 years and that number does not even include DVD sales.
Recently it’s was reported that Mr. Perry wishes to eventually get away from producing ‘Black Films’ and start working on projects that are more diverse. And although I can’t knock him for wanting to expand his reach, as the saying goes, if it isn’t broke, why fix it.
I think it’s safe to say that he can pretty much green light any project he wants to these days. With that type power I would hate to see him start ‘white-washing’ his films so soon. Instead, I would love to see him help out some up-and-comers. It would be great if Tyler could put his power behind projects for young black writers having trouble breaking into the industry. Of course he has no real responsibility to do such. However, it would be great to see a man, who was once homeless, start reaching down to pull up the others who are where he was.
Now, I’m in no way saying that Tyler isn’t helping people out. He’s almost single handedly keeping a lot of black actors employed (at least with major roles). But this is why I believe we need him so much. I can’t think of any other black writer/director/producer who has the type of pull he has at the moment. I just hope he decides to put someone else in the game that can fill the void he’ll leave when he decides to move away from ‘black films’.
Tyler Perry’s Upcoming Productions:

A Jazz Man's Blues (2009)

It would be nice.. Yet when we speak with faith, there is nothing wrong with acting on it. I feel you on this one.. This goes for any artist, producer, etc. who see the drive in some that has that hunger that they once possessed. The funny thing is once you make it, what else really is there to hunger or drive for?
