Wood Harris Selected to Play Sweetwater Clifton in Martin Guigui’s upcoming film about the first Africa American in the NBA.

Many may remember Wood Harris from HBO’s The Wire, yet this actor is taking on a much more impacting role. Harris is no stranger to basketball films as he also played in Above The Rim’ starring opposite Duane Martin, Marlon Wayans and the late Tupac Shakur.

Nathaniel "Sweetwater" Clifton started his athletic career playing for the New York Rens, which was an all black traveling basketball team. With such great ball handling skills, the Harlem Globtrotters invited the 6’8 Sweetwater to join the team. History was made the day that the New York Knicks decided to sign Sweetwater to the team in 1950, at the age of 27.

Clifton averaged 10 points and 9 rebounds per game, during his 8 seasons on the NBA and was named to the 1957 NBA All-Star team, scoring 8 points in 23 minutes in the game. At age 34, he became the oldest player in NBA history to be named an All-Star.

After playing in the ABL for the Chicago Majors, Sweetwater retired at the age of 40.

Casting is still taking place for other roles in the film.
