If you have seen any of the trailers or promotions for this movie, you’d swear it was all about magic. So did I, but I also noticed a subtle hint towards murder, revenge and obsession. As it turned out, the film was heavy in the latter.
Based in London England, two magicians are obsessed with their craft and basically try to 1-up each other, destroying their own lives in the quest.
Robert Angier played by Huge Jackman is out for revenge after the accidental death of his wife, caused by fellow magician Alfred Borden (Christian Baile). Rather than kill each other physically, the two engage in a bitter rilvary and sacrifice almost anything to gain an advantage over the other.
When Borden (Christian Baile) unveils a magic trick that Angier (Huge Jackman) can’t understand, he embarks on quest to find the answers, sparing no cost. In the end But Angier (Huge Jackman) finds a way to ultimately beat and destroy his wife’s accidental killer, utilizing the fantastical new powers of electricity and the scientific brilliance of radical inventor Nikola Tesla. However, he loses himself and the principles he once stood for.
There was very little awe inspiring magic in the movie. The drama and suspense is what keeps the film interesting. Near the end all the twists and secrets are unveiled and the tragedy of it all comes to light.
The movie also stars Michael Caine, David Bowie, Scarlett Johansson
I give the movie a 3 ½ of 5 stars. It makes for a decent date movie.
